The first taste of how permanent life with Holmes and Watson might be is felt that very evening when the women plan a special meal. Their efforts are wasted as Holmes and Watson do not return to Baker Street until very late, finding the table set with crystal and silver, but the women upstairs, indulging in a bottle of sherry.The case, however, was a minor one that only took one day and a train to Tunbridge Wells in the south, to clear up.Watson proposes to Sarah, and they are engaged. The next morning, Lestrade is back again. This time, matters are much more serious. A dead man, savagely murdered, opens the case for Holmes and Watson. Inconsistent stories by supposed witnesses at the crime scene challenge Holmes from the start, along with an apparent will made out in German. A second murder adds to the urgency to solve this case.Holmes goes into disguise to try to infiltrate the gang of criminals involved, nearly getting himself killed.
