Sherlock Holmes and the Heart of the Matter (Part 1: The Cambridge Crisis)

Louisa Ruth Ielo
4.9/5 (12661 ratings)
Description:On a rainy day in August, 1894, Sherlock Holmes is visited by 25 year old Marion Ryan, formerly of Canada, who tells of her concern about a man who seems to be following her and her cousin, Sarah Dartford-Trevail. They work at the Cobalt Inn in London, as servers, where a strange man shows up but does not harass them – does not even speak to them. He has been seen in the street where the women stay at the local Ladies’ Hall. After gathering some information from Miss Ryan, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson make an evening visit to the Cobalt Inn to try to view this stranger. He is there, and appears harmless. It is this night that Dr. Watson first sees Miss Dartford-Trevail and is interested in her, much to Holmes’s disappointment and reprimanding. It is determined that the four will go to Cambridge, and this is where the action really begins. The cousins’ fathers live here, in two old and unkempt homes. The cousins left a couple years earlier to go to make their own way in London, wanting to get away from the harsh hands and strict ways of their fathers. Both their mothers are gone from their lives, and they have no other relatives; none except for a grandfather, who apparently died and was leaving the women an inheritance when they both turned 25 – which happens on the very weekend they travel up to Cambridge.Holmes suspects the will and inheritance are bogus, and wants to prove it before uncovering further the deceit that follows these women. In Cambridge things come to a head very quickly, with much night-time horseback riding in frantic haste to save the women from a fate that Holmes discovers almost too late – that the women are the daughters of two men in the Hellfire Club, an underground group who indulge in activities of the criminal sort.Holmes questions his own actions in this adventure, not admitting, or seeing, that his feelings for Miss Ryan are perhaps clouding his judgement. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
