Description:This volume contains the War Diary of the Commandant Fourteenth Naval District (Com14) from December 1941 through April 1942, and the War Diary of the Commandant Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor from March through August 1942. The Com14 War Diary for December, 1941, January-February 1942, is a synthesis of several, but not all, sub-commands within the district. These first three months provide a brief synopsis of the major activities and actions undertaken by the outlying island bases (Midway, Palmyra, and Johnston) and the naval air stations at Kaneohe Bay and Maui. In the December 1942 War Diary, the loss of Wake is summarized as is the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Oahu. The War Diary of the Industrial Manager, Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor is contained in Com14 War Diary for December, January, and February.Starting in March, the war diaries of all activities within the district are submitted individually, in their entirety. Hence the beginning of the War Diary of the Commandant Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor. This war diary covers the activities of the Yard and its surrounding areas (Supply Department, Harbor Security, Port Director) in detail. The commandant, Rear Admiral William Furlong, was an individual with keen understanding of the history unfolding around him, his command, and the work being accomplished in and around Pearl Harbor. His war diary reflects this awareness.Conversely, with the sub-commands submitting their own war diaries, the March and April 1942 war diaries of the Commandant Fourteenth Naval District are reduced to the Honolulu Port Director’s list of ship comings and goings, with a few paragraphs mentioning key actions within the district (the March 4 bombing of Honolulu, ship sinkings, etc). No detailed Com14 war diary after April 1942 has appeared in my research. This does not imply such a thing is nonexistent, it only means I have yet to find it.What is included in this volume is what I have been able to locate to date. There are 1000s more pages still out there further detailing the time period from December 1941 through August 1942. This, however, is where it begins.I neither comment nor annotate. Such things are for potential future projects of a different nature. Here, I let the original words speak for themselves. I edit, but the content and context remains as is.This document has been altered from the original for publishing and readability purposes. Individual redundant page headings have been deleted. Empty page space has been removed. Typos have been corrected and inconsistencies eliminated. Geographical misspellings have not been changed. Select words in all-uppercase have been replaced with conventional lower case. Certain pages and/or sections have been rearranged for continuity. Other than the above revisions, these are the original Com14/Navy Yard Pearl Harbor War Diaries, as submitted to the Chief of Naval Operations. The War Diaries were compiled to chronicle the daily operations of the ships and commands of the U.S. Navy. This was done for contemporary analysis and as a historical record. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
