Description:This volume contains the war diaries of Vice Admiral William F. Halsey and his flagship USS Enterprise, covering the period November 28, 1941 through August 31, 1942. I’ve combined the two as an expedient and to fill the gap in Enterprise’s early war service, as her war diary does not begin until April 1942. The order to maintain a war diary did not come about until February 1942, but some ships and commands started theirs on December 7, 1941. Unfortunately, Enterprise was not one of them. Halsey, as Commander Aircraft, Battle Force, started his war diary on November 28, 1941, the day Task Force 8, with his flag in Enterprise, departed Pearl Harbor to deliver Marine F4F Wildcats to Wake Island. His time as a carrier task force commander came to an end in late May, when he was placed on the sick list with exhaustion and Rear Admiral Raymond Spruance assumed command of Task Force 16.In the future, the Halsey and Enterprise war diaries will be separated into individual paperbacks. When Halsey returns he is Commander South Pacific Force and Area, hence subsequent books will be for that command. Enterprise will have her own volumes (number as yet determined) for the remainder of the war, which will include the corresponding embarked air group.Halsey’s action report for the Marshall Islands raid is included herein. Unfortunately, only the surface ships action report for the Wake Island raid been located to date (the Enterprise report is unlocated). Nor has the report for the raid on Marcus Island been found. However, there is plenty in this the aforementioned Marshalls raid, the Doolittle raid, the Battle of Midway, the support of the landings on Tulagi-Guadalcanal, and the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. As well as the daily summaries comprising the war diaries. Enterprise’s damage report from the Marshalls raid is included (as is its Bureau of Ships loose rewording). This document has been altered from the original for publishing and readability purposes. Individual redundant page headings have been deleted. Empty page space has been removed. Typos have been corrected and inconsistencies eliminated. Geographical misspellings have not been changed. Select words in all-uppercase have been replaced with conventional lower case. Certain pages and/or sections have been rearranged for continuity. Other than the above revisions, these are the original Halsey/ENTERPRISE War Diaries, as submitted to the Chief of Naval Operations. The War Diaries were compiled to chronicle the daily operations of the ships and commands of the U.S. Navy. This was done for contemporary analysis and as a historical record. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
