Description:This dissertation focuses on the context, practices, processes and ideologies as well as the political and economic subjectivities of contemporary Southern Lebanese women's activism. The political consciousness and subjectivity of these women is born out of experiences and social structures that impact their lives and inform their practices. I explore issues of political participation and civil society, different forms of subjectivity and of agency, as well as economic development and globalized funding. This is mainly achieved through my analyses of interviews with members of women's group and individual activists. By presenting life histories of six women-activists with varying ideological stances and practices as well as varying degrees of political participation, this dissertation delineates the various forms of subjectivity that activists undertake. The life of three women based associations also explore the ways in which the activists' subjectivities are shaped by the organizations they join and create. Whereas Jam'iyyat Taqadum al-Mar'a al-Khayriyya (JTMK), or Women's Progress Association has been in operation since 1969, al-Hay'at-Nisa'iyya fi Hizbullah, The Women's Association of Hizbullah (WAH) is a more recent formation that benefits from a general context favoring Islamic practices.
