Schizoid Traits Among the Homeless Mentally Ill

Lisa Claire Rouff
4.9/5 (25857 ratings)
Description:Homelessness is a complex problem with many causes, including changes in housing availability, welfare spending, and social values. Another cause may be that certain psychiatric difficulties of the homeless themselves impede their ability to seek and benefit from the help currently available to them. This study focuses on one specific constellation of psychiatric difficulties among the homeless mentally ill, schizoid traits, in an attempt to see whether or not their presence is more closely associated with higher chronicity of homelessness and lower levels of engagement in treatment. For research participants in the NWHOME project (N = 125), schizoid traits were more prevalent than in a general psychiatric population. Further, gender appeared to moderate the association of schizoid traits with chronicity of homelessness and engagement in treatment. For women, the presence of schizoid traits was significantly associated with higher levels of homelessness chronicity. For men, the presence of two specific schizoid traits was significantly associated with remaining in treatment. Possible explanations of these findings and their implications for treatment and research will be discussed. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
