On March 20, 1813 he married Sophia Downing (1793-1866) in Barren Co., Kentucky. She was born in Frederick Co., Maryland. James and Sophia had nine children, all born in Kentucky. The youngest daughter, Melvina, was about a year old in 1837 when the family migrated to central Missouri. Both are buried in the Campbell Burying Ground south of Russellville, Missouri.
