Excerpt: Carl Schmitt (July 11, 1888 April 7, 1985) was a German jurist, Catholic philosopher, political theorist, and professor of law. Schmitt published several essays, influential in the 20th century and beyond, on the mentalities that surround the effective wielding of political power. He volunteered for the army in 1916. The same year, he earned his habilitation in Strasbourg. He taught at various business schools and universities - in Munich, Greifswald, Bonn, Berlin, and Cologne. In 1916 he married his first wife, Pawla Doroti, a Serbian woman who pretended to be a countess.
