Kalākaua I began his reign with a tour of the Hawaiian Islands which improved his popularity.In October 1874 the new King sent representatives to the United States to negotiate a reciprocity treaty that would help end the economic depression affecting Hawaii. In November, Kalākaua I himself traveled to Washington D.C. to meet President Ulysses S. Grant. An agreement was reached and the subsequent treaty was signed on January 30, 1875.
