Description:The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream is a Xian allegory written by John Bunyan. It's regarded as a significant work of religious English literature, has been translated into over 200 languages & has never been out of print. Bunyan began it while in the Bedfordshire county gaol for violating the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of services outside the established Church of England. Early scholars like John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's 2nd, shorter imprisonment for 6 months in 1675. Recent scholars like Roger Sharrock believe it was begun during his initial, lengthy imprisonment from 1660–72 right after he'd written a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. The English text comprises 108,260 words & is divided into two parts, each reading as a continuous narrative without chapter divisions. The 1st part was completed in 1677 & entered into the stationers' register on 12/22/1677. It was licensed & entered in the Term Catalogue on 2/18/1678, deemed the date of 1st publication. After the 1st edition of the 1st part in 1678, an expanded edition, with additions written after he was freed, appeared in 1679. The 2nd Part appeared in 1684. There were 11 editions of the 1st part in his lifetime, published in successive years from 1678-1685 & in 1688.
