Unveiling Jazbaa: A History of Pakistan Women's Cricket

Aayush Puthran
4.9/5 (23757 ratings)
Description:This book is a one-of-a-kind look into Pakistani cricket, shedding light on an area that has previously been ignored. Perhaps the best thing about Puthran’s writing is that one does not need to be interested in cricket to enjoy the book and appreciate the effort required to build a women’s cricket team. The writing is very well-done, meaning that people who do not watch cricket can enjoy the book and ardent cricket fans can feel the rush and excitement characteristic of watching a cricket match as they read this book.Puthran has gone back to the beginning of women’s cricket in Pakistan, starting in 1988 with Shaiza and Sharmeen Khan. He highlights the intense difficulty of normalizing women’s cricket in Pakistan and does a great job illustrating the taboo attached to girls playing sports in public in this country. While it may be generally assumed that building the women’s cricket team in Pakistan would have been a difficult process, Puthran’s book brings to light exactly how harsh and challenging it was. He speaks about various players and how their families rejected their desires, often harming them physically when they expressed wanting to play cricket professionally. He tells the story of how for many of the now internationally recognized players, the beginning required them to sneak out of their houses, skip various meals to pay for transport, lie to their family members, and beg and grovel in order to be allowed to play publicly. Beyond this, he addresses the frequently changing political atmosphere in Pakistan, writing about women’s lack of representation under Zia ul Haq, the changed dynamics under President Musharraf, and the impact of Imran Khan’s leadership on women’s cricket. At its core, the book points out the often unexplored obstacles that women have faced in their efforts to play the ‘gentlemen’s game’. Even beyond social stigmas, Puthran highlights the various issues with the PCB, politics within the PCB that restricted women or thwarted them from playing cricket, as well as the international approach to Pakistan in the wake of terrorism and security threats. The book is very holistic in that it examines cricket from various perspectives, representing just how many things the women had to tackle in order to play. From paying for entire tours, kits, and coaches out of pocket to battling the pressure to get married and have children in a patriarchal society, the women of Pakistani cricket have done it all.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
