Fighting amongst themselves they are forced to confront their differences but realise if they want to keep their clans alive they must be in collusion to beat Kisin and the Lavats who threaten all their lives.Amongst the angst and trepidation is Fern, seventeen and in love with her clan leader she has followed him against his wishes. She is caught by the Lakellers and taken as a gift to their Captain who plays a game of seduction with her. In the back of her mind is her love for Oak, strong, kind and gentle he has been everything to her but as he has matured as a leader, and she as a young woman, the love they have shared has turned to battles of wills due of her rebellious nature.
