Il a developpe une approche nouvelle du yoga, le yoga integral. Apres ses etudes en Angleterre (1879-1893) a Cambridge, il retourne en Inde et commence a etudier les grandes traditions de son pays. Frappe par la condition de ses compatriotes qu'il avait quittes jeune pour aller etudier, il devint un nationaliste fervent convaincu que son pays devait retrouver son independance. Peu a peu il lui sembla que pour retrouver son independance son pays devait s'appuyer sur son heritage culturel propre qui lie intimement philosophie et recherche spirituelle. Il entre lui-meme alors dans une recherche de pouvoirs spirituels qui lui permettraient de mieux lutter pour l'independance de l'Inde.
