King James's version, in comparison with all provious versions, is entitled to the highest praise, and it is chiefly by this comparison that its excellence is seen. And certainly vastly superior efforts were made to secure a high degree of accuracy. Forty-seven scholars were engaged on the work, more than twice the number that ever were employed on a similar work, if we except the Septuagint version. And both Churchmen and Puritans were selected, that the version might not be sectarian, as all previous versions had been, more or less. Also, it was to be free from marginal notes, except the merest explanation of terms, as Hebrew and Greek, and a few other words; otherwise we might have had even more of the Calvinism of Dort, the prelacy of Bancroft, and the absolutism of James. The result of the patient labors of those revisers was, no doubt, the nearest approach to the original text that had been given to the world for many centuries; but that there yet remained in that version many errors, both in the text and rendering, has never been questioned by competent scholars. How could it be otherwise? Every version upon which they relied was, confessedly, imperfect and untrustworthy. And then the time spent in the revision, at most about three years or less on the whole Bible, was too short to secure the perfection desired, and the men were otherwise employed at the same time in important labors.
