Description:The Real Mr Frankenstein by Don Shelton - art collector and historianThis is an investigative biography of Sir Anthony Carlisle (1768-1840) surgeon, author, inventor, and natural philosopher. Carlisle was twice President of the Royal College of Surgeons and for sixteen years Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy. There has been no previous biography of Carlisle and a year of research has uncovered new and startling perspectives of accepted history. A downloadable eBook version in .pdf format of over 300,000 words in over 500 pages and with hearly 300 illustrations, is now available from this website at a price of £9.99 (GBP9.99). It is a non-fiction book, meticulously researched, with over 1400 footnoted sources. The work explores Carlisle's life and times, to understand what influenced his own literary efforts and how, in turn, he influenced other writers, including Mary Shelley, for whom he was inspiration for Victor Frankenstein. In compiling and understanding the life of Carlisle, the biography serves to explore aspects of the 18C and early 19C which comprise the Social Genesis of Frankenstein. There are many literary references to Dr Frankenstein and popular culture has accepted this approbation. However, apart from a reference in the Introduction to Dr Erasmus Darwin, a word search of the novel, does not reveal any use of the word doctor, nor the term Dr Frankenstein. In the early 19C, the term doctor was used for a man trained as an apothecary. At the time all anatomists were surgeons, who used the courtesy title Mr, thus any reference to Victor should be as Mr Frankenstein. Hence Carlisle is referred to as The Real Mr Frankenstein. The Frankenstein connection was fascinating to find, but the main discovery during the research was truly shocking. This has become a firm belief that a number of pregnant subjects, whose dissected bodies appear in anatomical atlases published in the mid 18C by famous man-midwives of the time, were murdered to order, or 'burked"; the word used to describe victims of the 19C murderers, Burke and Hare. This startling and controversial conclusion is supported by very detailed research. Readers may find the research connected with this a little unsettling, it certainly was to me as the author, even though these murders occurred 250 years ago. What is also amazing, is that evidence is presented to show that the famous artist William Hogarth, was aware of the burking by Smellie and based his series of prints The Four Stages of Cruelty on Smellie's activities. Hogarth showed his disapproval, by depicting William Smellie in the process of being hung, drawn, and quartered in Stage Four.Carlisle has also been identified as the author of the 18C Gothic novel "The Horrors of Oakendale Abbey" previously attributed to 'Mrs Carver', a word-play on his occupation as a surgeon.link to Don Shelton's blog with more info, links and where to buy this ebook.http://therealmrfrankenstein.blogspot...We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
