As might be expected, Gretchen felt that the good pastor was right, and the doctor wrong; nor did she fail to lend her aid on the right side, lovingly bringing to her father's recollection the holy words which teach us that we may not lawfully do things of which we doubt the lawfulness, and urging him to follow the pastor's advice. Besides, a story that her mother had told in days gone by filled her with the fear that if her father once broke in upon this money, the temptation might come upon him to go beyond the little sum which at the first his conscience might perhaps not unfairly consider due to him. Her father gave some kind of promise about the matter, but not such as set at rest poor Gretchen's fears, and she could not but dread what might be the consequence of another parley with the doctor. That night she lay awake feverish and anxious. Many a sleepless night had Gretchen passed before this, but none so full of anguish and the fear of coming evil. With the first light of dawn she rose full of a growing terror, lest her father might yield to the temptation. More than once she stole anxiously into his room while he was asleep, and when he had risen, passed often in and out of it, dreading now to leave him alone, even for a moment, where nothing but a loose plank separated him from that hateful treasure. Presently he left the house to go down into the village for an axe he had left there to be sharpened. For a full minute Gretchen stood watching him as he went, and then remained for a time motionless, her eyes closed, her white lips moving as if in hurried prayer for guidance.
