Description:s/t: An historical account of the manners, customs, religion & laws, maritime expeditions & discoveries, language & literature of the ancient Scandinavians Paul Henri Mallet (8/20/1730–2/8/1807) was born & educated in Geneva. He became tutor for the count of Calenberg's family in Lower Saxony. In 1752 he became professor of belles lettres to the academy at Copenhagen. He studied the ancient literature & history of Denmark. In 1755 he published the 1st fruits of his researches as Introduction à L'histoire du Danemarch où l'on traite de la religion, des moeurs, des lois, et des usages des anciens Danois. A 2nd part, more particularly relating to Danish literature, Monuments de la mythologie et de la poesie des Celtes, et particulierement des anciens Scandinaves, came out in 1756 & was translated into Danish. An English translation, with notes & preface, by Bishop Th Percy, was issued in 1770 under the title of Northern Antiquities (republished with additions in 1847). It had a wide circulation, attracting much attention as being the 1st (albeit defective) translation into French of the Edda. The Danish king showed his appreciation by choosing Mallet to be preceptor of the crown prince. In 1760 he returned to Geneva, becoming professor of history. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
