The Founding of the Second British Empire, 1763-1793, Volume Two: New Continents and Changing Values

Vincent Todd Harlow
4.9/5 (19318 ratings)
Description:Together with Volume One this work represents an important to the studies which have been made of the American Revolution, its causes and results, for the two books show how the 'Second British Empire' — which lasted until the Treaty of Versailles — did not suddenly come into being after the American War of Independence, but was gradually being built up throughout the eighteenth century, and especially between 1763 and 1793.This second volume begins with a chapter which sets the 'new continents' and the 'changing values' in perspective. This is followed by a consideration of the problems and developments in India and a section on State Control. The policies of Pitt and Hawkesbury are then examined in some detail, after which there are sections devoted to the East Indies, China, and Far Eastern Trade. Trade in the Americas is also considered and this is followed by a section on the Quebec Act of 1774 and the Canada Act of 1791.Owing to Professor Harlow's death in December 1961, it has unfortunately been necessary to leave out his projected chapters on the settlements in Sierra Leone and Australia, and on the Free Port System. However, Dr A. F. Madden of Nuffield College, who is Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in Oxford, has drawn together the remaining loose ends and written a concluding chapter entitled 'The Question and Nature of Responsibility'. Although the book therefore does not give an entirely comprehensive view of all British colonies at this period, it represents a very full and authoritative account of developments in the East and the Americas. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
