Riches and Reform: Ecclesiastical Wealth in St Andrews, c.1520–1580 (St Andrews Studies in Reformation History)

Bess Rhodes
4.9/5 (16113 ratings)
Description:Finance is one of the best documented aspects of the late medieval and early modern Scottish Church. Numerous charters, rentals and account books record not only the complex web of lands, rents, and tithes which funded the pre-Reformation church s activities, but also the treatment of these assets during and after the religious changes of the mid-sixteenth century. Yet, despite this abundance of written evidence, the impact of religious reform on Scottish church wealth is relatively unstudied by historians. Riches and Reform addresses this gap, revealing how the religious upheavals of the 1550s and 1560s affected the income and estates of ecclesiastical foundations based in St Andrews. Riches and Reform firstly examines the extent and administration of church wealth in St Andrews on the eve of the Reformation, before considering how the city s change in confession impacted on the local religious economy. It provides both an economic assessment of an important religious centre, and challenges traditional assumptions about the fate of Scotland s ecclesiastical wealth before, during and after the Reformation. Contrary to the widely held assumption that the country s conversion to Protestantism had limited and gradual ramifications for church estates, this book instead argues that the Reformation had a substantial and immediate impact on St Andrews church wealth. Drawing upon a wide selection of sources, it is shown that whilst a proportion of the Catholic Church s wealth was transferred to the Reformed Kirk, the majority was dispersed amongst lay people and institutions. By proving this alternative view, Riches and Reform provides a pioneering overview of the economic implications of reform in an important Scottish religious centre, and a fascinating comparison with events in England, showing that even without an English-style nationalisation of church property religious reform could trigger far-reaching economic changes."We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
