Tales by Leigh Hunt

William Angus Knight
4.9/5 (31970 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Tales by Leigh Hunt: Now First Collected James henry leigh hunt was born in October 1784 at the village of Southgate, in the parish of Edmonton, Middlesex. The neighbourhood of the little village is full of associations to literary Englishmen. At Edmonton, Marlowe - the father of the British drama - was born. There Charles Lamb lies buried, with Coleridge not far off and Steele, Arbuthnot, Akenside, Keats, and Shelley, all lived, at different times, at no great distance from it. Hunt was of American extraction, his father having been originally a lawyer in Philadelphia; and his mother was the daughter of a Philadelphia merchant. Though destined for the clerical office, his father began life in the practice of the law. As a barrister, he took the side of the British Govern ment in its dispute with America, - both making speeches, and writing pamphlets in its behalf, and, in consequence, he not only became unpopular, but was exposed to violence. He was put in prison, and only escaped by bribing the sentinel in charge. Crossing the Atlantic with all speed.
