Casey Fletcher seems to need a break from the bustle of the city and the invasion of the paparazzi in order to grieve the passing of her spouse. Casey grudgingly agrees to spend time at the family lake home in Vermont, as suggested by her mother. While sipping a drink on the veranda, she observes her new neighbours, Tom and Katherine Royce, in their glass-fronted home across the lake. With the use of a set of high-tech binoculars, Casey is able to observe the Royces from a distance while growing more infatuated with them. Then Katherine vanishes without a trace, and Casey cannot make sense of the situation. She feels Tom had something to do with the disappearance of the ex-supermodel, but she can not prove it. Casey is unaware that Katherine's absence is more complicated than it first seems. Sager is excellent at building tension in a restricted, at times claustrophobic environment, and he makes excellent use of his unreliable narrator. Fans of tales that keep the pulse beating and the mind active will appreciate this one, although a couple of the plot turns may be difficult to accept.
