History of the State Bank of Pakistan: 1948-1960 (History of the State Bank of Pakistan #1)

S. Aijaz Husain
4.9/5 (27513 ratings)
Description:This book is the first attempt of its kind as a dispassionate analysis and evaluation of the role the State Bank of Pakistan has played in shaping the economy of the new State in general and the organisation of the banking system in particular. The youngest central bank at the time of its establishment in July 1948, it was also the least experienced in the art of central banking. It had to accomplish a truly delicate and difficult task for which it had neither the machinery nor the men. Like the economy of the State, its banking was in a state of chaos. The State Bank had no resources and no reserves. All its assets were locked up in the vaults of the Reserve Bank of India which were beyond its power to recover. Pakistan had no currency of its own nor a press for printing of notes. For the handling of the numerous problems it faced, the means of disposal were limited. Their solution called for patience and perseverance, determination and sense of dedication. The country had to pay a heavy price to solve them. What price it paid, is not within the knowledge of the highest cadre of the banking hierarchy since the mass of the material lay buried in the records and reports and even in the store house of memory of the men who were directly concerned with the events and the circumstances in which the Bank was born and grew to maturity. The story of the Bank in all its multifarious activities has never been told with exactitude and precision in a language that is frank and forthright. Nothing has been suppressed or concealed and everything has been laid bare for the reader to make his own assessment of the odds against which it was pitted in its formative phase. The historical background provides an insight into a situation beset with insurmountable obstacles, and the disputes with the Reserve Bank of India of the impassable hurdles placed in its path in the performance of its duties. The replacement of Indian currency by Pakistan notes and coins was itself an extraordinary undertaking because of the lack of physical capacity for printing them in requisite quantities. The operations of the Bank pertaining to the control and inspection of the scheduled banks, the evolution of its own machinery for exchange control and organisation of agricultural credit, the provisions made for the fringe benefits and welfare of staff and settlement of disputes with its employees, form part of the study. The Bank as an autonomous institution created under a separate charter was naturally concerned in upholding and asserting its autonomy consistent with its obligations to lend its support to the economic policies of the Government. The book is a compendium of facts and their analysis profitable both to the practitioners and professionals alike. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
