Description:Humans had traveled to Nu-Earth in suspended animation over a hundred years before first contact. They had been genetically modified for the thin atmosphere of the lower gravity planet, but they still had to live in pressurized shelters and wear breathing masks when outside.Iron is a rare element on the planet, so native plants use purple retinal rather than iron-based chlorophyll, and animals have blue, copper-based blood cells rather than iron-based hemoglobin. And it’s a constant struggle to produce enough iron sulfate fertilizer to grow terrestrial crops for food and trees for terraforming.Unbeknownst to the humans, another sapient species lives under the sea. The Kindred have meter-wide shells and six tentacles through which they can discharge electricity to defend themselves from predators, and they use electrical signals to communicate. They live on plants rich in fructose because their bodies can process that type of sugar in the absence of oxygen. And since they spend most of their lives underwater, they use sonar to sense their surroundings instead of sight.The Kindred reproduce by laying eggs in Sanctuary Pools just inland from the coast. And they periodically shed their shells and grow new ones in the safety of these ponds. First contact with humans occurs when two teenagers stray too close to one of these protected ponds. A Kindred Guardian uses electric shocks to drive the teenagers away, and the level of violence escalates with each subsequent encounter.
