I made a fishing pole from a sapling, a piece of string, a hook stolen from my grandfather’s tackle box, and a stick for a bobber. I went fishing in the ditch in front of the house. And caught fish! Along with frogs, turtles, crayfish and other assorted ditch residents. As time went on and I was a teenager, I witnessed my friends going on fishing trips with their families to far-away places. I envied them. I did get invited once but there was just no way I could come up with the money, so I couldn’t go. But I did ride my bike to the lake every day to fish from the poison ivy covered bank of the cove. I promised myself that one day I would go on a grand fishing trip to a far-away place. Having a life-long education in doing a lot with a little, I knew I could pull it off.
