Description:With the new rhymes and rhyme-stories in this book I venture to present again a number from Beyond the Mountain which are needed as text for the sketches made since the book was published.Four of these borrowed rhymes and rhyme-stories I have rewritten in abbreviated form; the others are borrowed intact or only slightly revised.Although the wild flowers sketched are all Adirondack friends of mine, I am authoritatively informed that most of them are common in most sections of the northern and middle states.The sweet-fern is a special friend of mine from Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It grows on the hill above "Shadow Brook," so named by Hawthorne, who formerly lived in the neighborhood.The few garden flowers sketched are all familiar friends requiring no introduction excepting, perhaps, the butter-fly bush. I made its acquaintance at Ridgfield, Connecticut, where another specimen, from the same garden, won a prize at our local flower show of the Garden Club.The honeysuckle is also a garden friend from Ridgefield but it is of the same familiar variety that Elf King planted to grow about the porch of my childhood's home on Staten Island, New York, and I see growing riotously wild in the woods about my present home in Washington, D.C.With affectionate appreciation I again acknowledge gratefully the conscious and unconscious help in my work which I have received from my nieces and nephews.
