From the 1620s until the middle of the eighteenth century, unburnt books - books that survived intentional or accidental fire - became a major attraction for princes, libraries, and publishers. To cope with an event that seemed counter-intuitive, possibly supernatural, for some miraculous, and for many marvellous, contemporaries preserved these books, narrated the story of their survival, and discussed their significance. Exploring these reactions and, more generally, reflecting on how these unusual objects (being both material and textual) engendered modes of religious as well as historical engagement, contribute to our understanding of the Lutheran conception of and affection for material religious objects.
