Health of People, Health of Planet and Our Responsibility: Climate Change, Air Pollution and Health

4.9/5 (34589 ratings)
Description:The influence of humans on climate change has been established through extensive published evidence and reports. However, the connections between climate change, the health of the planet and the impact on human health have not received the same level of attention. Therefore, the global focus on public health impacts of climate change is a recent area of interest triggered by two new international initiatives, one by the World Health Organization and the other by LANCET, what is known as the LANCET Commission on Climate Change and Health. This recent focus is timely since climate scientists have concluded that climate changes have led to new weather extremes such as floods, storms, heat waves, droughts and fires. Weather extremes have led to over 606,000 deaths and displaced close to 4 billion people in the last 20 years. The majority of the previous work on health impacts of climate change was limited to epidemiologic approaches and outcomes and less focused on multidisciplinary multi-facet collaborations between physical scientists, public health researchers and policy makers. Further, the context of faith and ethics as the underpinning of such multidisciplinary approaches was not previously explored. This open access book builds on the ideas and data described during a workshop held at the Vatican organized by the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences between Nov 3-5th 2017 that brought together a unique inter-disciplinary team of experts to address the connection between human health and planetary health in relation to climate change and air pollution. The book not only describes the problem but also presents solutions to the problem of climate disruption. The problems described include air pollution, climate change, extreme weather, and related health impacts that range from heat stress, vector-borne diseases, food and water insecurity and chronic diseases to malnutrition and mental well-being.Solutions and actions in practice are oriented towards the different sectors of civic society, the faith leadership, political leadership and inter-pinned by ethics, advocacy, and policy with a special focus on poor and vulnerable populations. The book highlights and summarizes the areas we think will resonate more with the public, faith leaders, scientists of all disciplines including the humanities, students of science and policy makers.Since it is easily accessible for the non-specialist, the book is a valuable tool for higher education, professional institutions and educators for teaching and practicing climate action plans. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
