The History of St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral: St. Mark's Parish, 1889-1897

Alan J. Davidson
4.9/5 (10699 ratings)
Description:The publication of this early history of Seattle's St. Mark's Cathedral occurs but a few months shy of the 130th anniversary of the June 1889 founding of St. Mark's parish - the forerunner of today's Cathedral - and the dedication eight months later of its first church in a part of town then called "North Seattle," a still-recognizable triangular block of land bounded by Fourth and Fifth Avenues and Olive and Stewart Streets. The decade of the 1880s was transformative for the fledgling pioneer city of Seattle, settled just twenty-seven years earlier. During the ten years of that decade, the population grew by over 1,100 percent, bringing well-educated professionals, sophisticated businessmen, financiers, and many others experienced in the civic affairs of mature cities. Robust growth of residential neighborhoods, expanded transportation, and modernized infrastructure were part of the story. The number of churches grew, as well - from seven in 1880 to fifty-four in 1890. One exception, though, was the single Episcopalian parish whose tiny 1870 church was unable to accommodate the many newly arrived congregants. Dissension within the congregation ensued - lay leaders advocating expansion in conflict with a resistant rector and his supporters. These are the dynamic elements out of which a new parish, St. Mark's, was formed, took root, and became an important influence in the religious, cultural, and civic life of the city and, in time, of the region. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
