Description:The prophecy of the Biblical prophet Daniel that covers the longest period of time is found in the eleventh chapter of the book by his name. It is written mostly in plain rather than symbolic language. It covers from the early days (538 B.C. ) of the world power Medo-Persia, then the nation of Greece, then Pagan and Papal Rome to the time of the end (1798), and on past our day to the yet future second coming of Christ.Over the years, differences as to the powers referred to in the last ten verses (Daniel 11:36-45) of the chapter have developed in the Christian community. In the Seventh-day Adventist Church, two main explanations exist-a presently minority group believes that Revolutionary France, under Napoleon, fulfilled verses 36-39, and that Turkey has already fulfilled verses 40-44, leaving it to fulfill, or to lead out in the fulfillment of, verse 45. The present majority in Adventism hold to the belief that the Papacy has, and or will, fulfill these verses. Over the last few years there has developed an increased interest in this prophecy because of its relation to our present day and the end of the world.The editor/compiler of this present volume has spent several months attempting to clarify the strengths and weaknesses of the two positions. It was discovered that the majority of us church members have never really studied the material in great depth. Most of us do not know our church or world history well enough to make a well-informed defense of either position. We tend to accept what we hear the majority of other members say. Few of us really know what the pioneers of our church really believed and presented to the world by the millions of copies of numerous publications. We have heard it rumored that there was a disagreement between James White, husband of Ellen White, and Uriah Smith. Brother White referred to the power in verses 40-45 as being the Papacy, while Brother Smith promoted the nation of Turkey. Perhaps in part, because of the closeness of James White to the Prophetess, the majority of us have adopted his position, and believe that the Papacy has been the majority view of our church from its early days.Searches of the present editor's personal library; the materials in the Ellen G. White and Words of the Adventist Pioneer sources; and the worldwide internet with the assistance of friends turned up an amazing amount of documentation of what our pioneers, almost unanimously, believed and taught for some seven decades, as to what power is the king of the north spoken of in Daniel 11:40-45. Though the search could not hope to be exhaustive, it was amazing the number of authors and publications that were basically in harmony on this topic. From the minor differences in the explanations of these verses, it can be seen, that the various authors were writing the convictions from their own personal study, and not merely parroting Uriah Smith: it is impressive as to their adherence to the scripture-"just as it reads." It is also impressive as how completely Turkey fulfilled literally verses 40-44 in 1798, and soon thereafter.Most amazing was the discovery that Ellen White never clearly expressed approval of the position of her husband, but in fact, stated approval on several occasions of the preaching of "The Eastern Question" (with Turkey as the king of the north). Also amazing is documentation that the two sons of James and Ellen White-Edson and Willie-directly, or indirectly, gave added support to that of their mother; the same with the son of Willie White-Arthur White. These, and other discoveries, are reviewed at the end of the book.This publication contains some ninety documents and statements to encourage and facilitate personal study.
