Oliver Twist (Driver Classics)

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (26095 ratings)
Description:Oliver Twist is the story of a young orphan who escapes the miserable living conditions and wrath of his caretaker, Mr Bumble, after asking him for more food. After his escape, young Oliver finds that life on the streets is just as bad or worst, and when he meets the Artful Dodger, hearing that he can get food and lodging, he accompanies him to meet Fagin and his gang of pickpockets. Since young Oliver has no place to live or means to support himself, for sake of sustenance and lodging, he joins the gang of pickpockets and enters into what would have been a perpetual life of crime, had it not been for a thieving mission going awry.      In the aftermath of the botched thieving mission wherein young Oliver narrowly avoids going to prison, he finds himself in the care of kind Mr Brownlow. Meanwhile, the pickpocket gang leader Fagin and brutal Bill Sikes are searching diligently for young Oliver intending to kidnap and drag him back into their gang of pickpockets.       Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy’s Progress, is Charles Dickens’s second novel. It was first published as a serial 1837–39 under Dicken‘s pseudonym “Boz” in Bentley’s Miscellany and in a three-volume book in 1838. It was the first of the author’s works to depict the impoverished London underworld and express his belief that poverty, unless opposed and defeated, will lead one into a life of perpetual crime.         Dickens himself experienced the degradation of poverty and hunger, spending part of his own childhood living in and experiencing, firsthand, the link between poverty and crime. Exactly what percentage of Oliver Twist is factual of Dickens’ own youth, and fictional, no one knows with any degree of certainty. Nevertheless, the story is a literary masterpiece in presenting readers to the problems of the poor and their plight in such a remarkable way that it continues to speak to modern audiences.      Dickens illustrates in the theme of Oliver Twist his belief that Good can triumph over Evil. He believed that since there was an attributable link between environment and character development or poverty and habitual crime caused by one‘s improvised environment, and that both evil and good are present within us all, that whereas proper environment is the impetus that will nourish to fruition one‘s good character development; conversely, an improper environment is the impetus that will just as readily nourish to fruition one’s evil character development. He believed that social reform at the government level could regulate environment to nourish the development of good character. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
