Throughout a career spanning half a century, as bookseller, reviewer, editor and promoter of the good word about good books, she stimulated authors, illustrators, and publishers to hold the highest standards for text and illustration for young readers.Bertha Mahony was a member of the first class to attend Simmons College in Boston. Later, as secretary to the officers of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union, she conceived the idea of The Bookshop for Boys and Girls and persuaded the Union to sponsor it under her management. In The Bookshop, which became famous for its unique atmosphere and well-informed staff, she and her assistant, Elinor Whitney, held exhibits of artists' work, special programs for children, and prepared book lists on many subjects.
