Description:In the spring of 1941, Gertrude Baskerville set out from the Kitchener area with her ailing husband and 16-year old son to join her brother in establishing a new life on the shores of South Tea Lake in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Within a year her husband had died from injuries received during WWI, her son had been shipped overseas to fight in WWII and her brother had decided that better opportunity lay for him and his family to move to British Columbia. Gertie, as she was called, was totally alone. But Algonquin Park had captured her soul, so rather than return to Kitchener, she decided to stay and see if she could carve our a life for herself in the Algonquin wilderness. For over 35 years she earned a living hooking rugs of Tom Thomson paintings and crocheting posy bed spreads using natural ingredients to dye the coloured threads that she needed. Occasionally she would allow visitors passing by to stay in one of her sleeping cabins for a donation of one sort or another. Over the years she was adopted by a wide range of wildlife from deer to chipmunks and squirrels, great blue herons, song birds and the occasional bear. In winter she got water by chopping a hole in the ice and stayed healthy using a collection of home remedies that today would be considered completely unorthodox. In the 1970s she was 'discovered' by Stan Tripp , then a well-known naturalist writer who gave her the nickname "The Lady of Algonquin Park". He would write newsy articles about her life and her animal friends on South Tea Lake after his periodic visits that for a time, made her well-known across North America.
