Description:The town of "Baldy" was a settlement in Colfax County, New Mexico, 4 miles northeast of Elizabethtown, high on Baldy Mountain, and about 30 miles west of Cimarron, along the beautiful Cimarron Canyon. In the 1860’s a Ute Indian showed a piece of rich copper float to a Capt. William Moore, owner of a sutler’s store at Fort Union, New Mexico. Moore had found the Indian badly wounded and on the verge of death, and had given him water and took him back to the fort, where he was nursed back to health. Ever grateful to Captain Moore, the Indian gave him several "pretty rocks" which Moore quickly recognized as being rich in copper. The Indian had been found the pretty rocks on the upper slope of Baldy Mountain (12,441 feet) on the Western edge of the Maxwell Land Grant. Later, the Indian agreed to lead Captain Moore and his partner, William Kroenig to the source of the pretty rocks at a spot high on the majestic mountain, where they found enough copper to stake the first of many claims in the area. Moore and Kroenig quickly discovered that there was gold on the claim and the great Baldy Gold Rush was on..! Baldy Mountain was indeed a golden mountain and the story that follows was just as exciting..!We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
