Description:Excerpt from An Address Delivered at the Formation of the Blackstone Monument Association: Together With the Preliminaries, and Proceedings at Study Hill, July 4, 1855Shawmut, was taxed 12 Shillings. This was a large tax for those times, and would imply that he had made considerable improvements at Shawmut.' Shawmut was the Indian name of the peninsula where the city of Boston now stands; and when Governor Winthrop and his company arrived at Charles town, in 1630, they found Blackstone in quiet possession of Shawmut, opposite the location they had chosen. Blackstone's cottage stood near a spring on the south side of the mouth of Charles river, and he was at that time the only person who inhabited Boston.
