Description:Josiah Henson was born into slavery, but freedom was his constant dream. Brothers and sisters sold away, the boy was severely beaten for possessing a book. Although he planned to earn enough money as a preacher to purchase his own freedom, he is betrayed and narrowly escapes the New Orleans slave block. The Underground Railroad becomes his only option and he makes a daring escape from Kentucky with his wife and four children. Josiah Henson is believed to be the only ex-slave to establish a community for other fugitives in Canada. At Dawn or Dresden, runaway slaves could receive educations and learn the trades and skills to support themselves as Canadian citizens. Henson became a leading voice for his enslaved brethren and like Harriet Tubman, risked his life by returning to the United States, eventually leading 118 slaves to freedom. He met with leading abolitionists and notable politicians, including Queen Victoria, to promote the anti-slavery cause and raise funds for his community in Ontario.
