The Alfred Dorrance Story

Louis Serna
4.9/5 (13713 ratings)
Description:Alfred Alejandro Dorrance was born in Cimarron, New Mexico on June 12, 1919, to Ricardo and Fedelia Dorrance. He grew up in this small village in northern New Mexico, among his brothers and sisters and childhood friends. He was not a tall boy, nor a large boy, in fact, there was not too much about him to suggest that he would ever be much more than an average kid who grew up in a small town. What was evident about Alfred was that he was very self- assured and probably had a drive to finish what he set out to do, and perhaps a sense of self discipline that was more than the ordinary. I suppose that there was also an air about him that suggested that this was not a kid to be bullied or taken lightly.., even though he was a small kid ! About 1936, while still in High School, Alfred and the other boys his age were already hearing the rumblings of war, in a place far away on another continent called Europe. The Germans and Japanese were the topic of worried discussions among every person who feared for their freedom and feared war! As Alfred and his school mates came closer to Graduation Day, from those hallowed halls of old Cimarron High, 13 already older classmates who were in military uniforms! To any young man contemplating whether to go or stay, the glamour of it all was made more inviting by the news media's portrayal of how we yanks were doing "the right thing", by going over there and teaching those bastards a lesson! Alfred certainly struggled with his own manhood when his older brother Albert, joined the service and went off to war. By the time Alfred graduated from Cimarron High in 1938, he had decided to join the Marines. Unfortunately, when he presented himself to the recruiter, the Marines turned him down..!! They thought his size just didn’t measure up to their requirements. Disappointed, but still determined to serve, Alfred then tried the Navy... they too turned him down... They felt he was just too small a man. Finally, the Army said, "if you can carry a rifle, we'll take you"! and Alfred was inducted on January 9, 1941.Alfred would be right at the front of many battles... always distinguishing himself as a reliable soldier, a dedicated leader, and a fearsome fighting man who earned several medals for bravery and valor beyond the call of duty... including the Bronze Star., the SilverStar.., and others..! It would be the Army... who would proudly say, “this man.., is one of ours!!! The man who the Marines and the Navy thought "was too small and couldn't make it...!!"In battle, brave men are measured one at a time, and always by their peers! These are the men others call heroes... and Alfred Dorrance earned the right to be in that elite few!We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
