Description:Edgar Allan Poe Poe lived a short and tragic life. He was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His father abandoned the family a year after his birth, and his mother died when he was just two years old. In 1835 he started working for several newoutlets, and married in 1836. However, that marriage would‘nt last as his wife, Virginia Clemm, died in 1847, which sent Poe spiralling further into psychological problems and alcoholism. Having lost his home, he sought a shelter for the homeless in Baltimore, Maryland, where he collapsed. Later in a hospital, he raged and screamed, that they should just shoot him in the head. Only after days he calmed down. On October 7th, 1849, he died at the age of forty. His last words were: „God help my poor soul“ William Wilson was originally a short novel with very autobiographic elements. In it, Poe uses the doppelganger as a literary motive to handle subjects such as guilt, conscience and descending into madness and hate. William Wilson finds himself haunted by another William Wilson, that shares every aspect of himself; they were born on the same day, have the same name and even look alike. However, while his doppelganger is a moral person, William himself falls for every temptation with joy.
