CityNovel 2016

Description:Very excitingly, 2016 marks the tenth anniversary of the first of these volumes. When my predecessor, Harriett Gilbert (now of Radio 4’s Good Read), founded this course in 2004, she knew she was stepping into quite unknown territory. True, at that time Creative Writing MAs were springing up all over British Academia like dandelions on a previously smooth college lawn. But Harriett’s idea was to create something ambitiously different: a two-year course where the student was actually required to write a whole novel. Not a fifteen thousand-word sample. A complete, roll-your-sleeves-up, publishable novel. The audacity seems to have paid off. I’m proud to say that City University is now right up there at the top of the league when it comes to getting our students published – usually two out of each year’s dozen students. Just this year, we have seen three debut novelists published: Jem Lester’s Shtum, a comic (and Jewish) take on parenting an autistic child; Hannah Kohler’s The Outside Lands, set in California and Vietnam in the 1960s, simultaneously published in three countries; and Epiphany Jones by Michael Grothaus, a tale about a seamier side of the movie business.Meanwhile this latest volume features a dozen new and striking novel openings, all demanding your attention. As ever the range is as wide as our student cohort: from the kitchens of an Indian restaurant, to the locker rooms of a Major League Baseball team, to a brothel in pre-war France. There are crime scenes and civil wars, visions and curses, good fathers and bad mothers and much else in between.I do hope you enjoy these excerpts as much as I have enjoyed working with their authors. Along the way, our 2016 graduates have been mentored by Leo Benedictus, Jon Canter, Clare Clark, Rachel Cusk, Emma Darwin, Edward Docx, Gavin Extence, Hanif Kureishi, Julie Myerson, Jeremy Page and Sunjeev Sahota. We would like to thank all these writers who gave so generously of themselves and their time. And thanks most of all to my fellow tutor, Clare Allan for her unflagging energy, insight, kindness – and endless dog stories.Jonathan MyersonProgramme Director, September 2016We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
