Abstract: Abstract Since the government's introduction of the Medium of Instruction Guidance for Secondary Schools (Education Department 1997) and its implementation in 1998, all secondary schools in Hong Kong, except for 114, have to use Chinese to teach Form 1 to Form 3 students. However, many schools change the medium from Chinese to English at Form 4 when they are free to decide the medium of instruction. Previous studies show negative effects on students' academic achievement in non-language subjects especially in Biology when they are taught in English (e.g. Lee, 2002). Thus, the present study aims to find how a late change in the medium of instruction affects students' learning in Biology. Two classes in the same school with the same curriculum taught by the same teacher but in different medium, one in Chinese (CMI) and the other in English (EMI), would be studied to see if there is any impact of a change in the medium of instruction at Form Four on students' approaches to learning and on their academic outcome. Findings showed a negative impact on EMI students' academic achievement in Biology in the first term. However, the negative effect diminishes and the EMI students regained their advantage over the CMI students at the end of the school term. Also more EMI students adopted a deep approach and an achieving approach to learning than the CMI students. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3033081 Subjects: Native language and education - China - Hong KongLanguage and education - China - Hong KongAcademic achievement - China - Hong KongWe have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
