Description:Excerpt from Town Talk: January 3, 1903-June 27, 1903 Governor Gage has always prided himself on his devo tion to his friends. It has been urged in extenuation of many of the questionable acts of his Administration that he was prompted by loyalty to his friends, a very fine trait with which to cover a multitude of political blunders and sins against the commonwealth. It was the misfortune of Gage, perhaps, that he had friends to whom he could not vouchsafe the sort of loyalty they expected without being untrue to himself and the people whose interests he was sworn to protect. One of his latest manifestations of loy alty was in tendering a Supreme Court justiceship to his private secretary, Mr. Foley. This Mr. Foley was formerlv the law partner in Los Angeles of Mr. Gage. His prae tice was not so large as to occasion grief on his part when he quit it to accept the secretaryship. Nobody ever sus pected him of being qualified for a high judicial position. However, here was an opportunity for Mr. Gage to be good to himself as well as to his friend. As Mr. Gage is soon to resume the practice of law it would boom his business considerably if his ex-secretary were on the Supreme Bench, for that would be prima facie evidence that. He was in touch with the court. At this writing Mr. Foley has about decided not to accept. Evidently he is not loyal to Gage.
