The legitimate use of a preface is to serve the reader as a key to the author's work - explaining the purposes for which it is written, its plan or arrangement, the sources whence the author has collected his information, and the general grounds on which he lays claim to public attention. As all this, however, may be done by an introductory letter, as well as through the stiff medium of a preface, I will, on the present Occasion, dispense with the latter usage, and address myself directly to you - the only parties for whom the book is intended, - and to whom alone I should feel a pleasure in dedicating it, if so poor a compliment were worth your acceptance.
