Twice a year Western merchants went East to replenish their stock of goods. The stagecoaches were run night and day, traveling about one hundred miles in twenty-four hours. About. The time we speak of one of these elegant stages left Baltimore crowded with Western passengers, mostly merchants, for Wheeling, on the Ohio River. Having traveled one day and night, they were crossing the mountains slowly, tired and sleepy. Discussions on various topics were often encouraged to enliven the otherwise tedious hours. On this occasion three of the passengers were discussing the claims of several of the States to the title Garden Spot of America, while others listened or slept.
