Inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Sabbath, band leader Billy Corgan and fellow guitarist James Iha formed the band in 1988. Shortly afterwards they were joined by D'Arcy Wretzky (bass) and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin whose drug addiction later led to his downfall. Corgan's journey to enlightenment opened a window to a tortured and introspective mind which from the group's first album, Gish, struck a chord with a growing army of fans. The album shot to No 1 on the influential Rockpool College Radio Chart and was followed by the group's second LP Siamese Dream released in July 1993 which entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at No 10 selling over 3 million copies.
