At any rate Bright had not been a grown man many years before he went to Gallatin County, Kentucky, to bring back Mary E. Turpin as his wife. It was his lifelong friend, Green, who operated the ferry when Bright crossed the Ohio to claim his wife.4 The Bright family was not long in establishing itself as a prosperous and respected group in Madison, and the men soon took their places as leaders in the life of the community. Jesse D. Bright was fortunate in spending his young man hood in what was then the chief city in Indiana. Madison was the seat of power, wealth, and learning in Indiana during the thirties.
