Description:The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has been dancing for 40 years (at the writing of the book; now, 2013, 75 years). Only one other North American company (the San Francisco Ballet) is older. It has brought the experience of dance to thousands of people in hundreds of hundreds of towns and cities on four continents, places as different and far apart as Moose Jaw and Moscow. The RWB has always been small--never more than 26 or 27 dancers. And while this smallness has enhanced the company's portability, it has also created obstacles that have often been difficult to surmount. Yet the RWB has always gone on putting on a show, through financial calamity, internal strife, and even a fire that once destroyed everything. The RWB's catalogue of firsts is impressive: the first "royal" company in the Commonwealth, first Canadian company to Russia, Europe, Australia, South America, the United States, and so on.
