Ambassador's Daughter, The Autobiography of Meriel Buchanan

Meriel Buchanan
4.9/5 (22477 ratings)
Description:An autobiography which includes a truly unique account of the Russian Revolution, from the eyes of the daughter of the British diplomat Sir George Buchanan. This book is important because it was published in the same year as the 40th Anniversary of the Revolution, as what Lockhart calls an 'antidote to exaggeration' (p. xiii). In contrast to the Soviet view of the October Revolution and those of other groups, Buchanan defends the role of her father in this book.Buchanan had been accused by Russian aristocrats of encouraging the revolutionaries, rather than being appreciated as a voice of reason to a crumbling regime. He had also been criticised by the Soviets for his close relationship with the liberal Provisional Government led by Alexander Kerensky which formed after the February Revolution. In addition, he been attacked for failing to ensure that the Tsar and his family were evacuated from Russia before their execution. In the Foreword to this book, Lockhart supports Buchanan and states that he 'strove valiantly to have the Tsar and his family sent to England' (p. xiv). We now of course know that it was Mary of Teck (1867 - 1953) who persuaded Lloyd George to retract the British offer of sanctuary and not Buchanan. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
