To the members of that seminary I dedicate this volume as a record of their share in its composition and in recognition of the inspiration the teacher may receive from his pupils. The Royal Spanish Academy, R. Men�ndez Pidal, K. Pietsch, and H. R. Lang have given valuable aid in many ways. A. G. Sola linde and A. Castro have examined the Escorial manuscript and furnished important items that were lacking. G. Gruen baum has rendered scholarly services in connection with the proofs. To all of these I take pleasure in expressing my grat itude and indebtedr�ess. To R. Men�ndez Pidal, however, my obligations are of an exceptional character.
