"The ten stories found in this book belong to the people of Sierra Leone, having been passed down orally from generation to generation in the languages of Krio, Temne, Mende, Limba and Kuranko, and, much more recently, having been translated into English. The two Krio stories were gathered in the winter of 2010 from storytellers in the Freetown area via tape recorder by the artist Julius Parker. He recorded them in Krio and translated them into English for this project. The remaining eight stories were gathered from out-of-print academic books: Royal Antelope and Spider: West African Mende Tales by Marion Kilson (1976), Limba Stories and Storytelling by Ruth Finnegan (1967), Allegories of the Wilderness: Ethics and Ambiguity in Kuranko Narratives by Michael Jackson (1982), and Temne Stories by Abdul Karim Turay (1989).
