Then were published the first Jewish newspapers in Russia, as the "Hamelitz," the "Hacarmel," in Hebrew. (The "Hamagid" appeared a few years earlier in Liek, Prussia), and the "Kol-Mevaser," in Yiddish. All these newspapers and a great number of "enlightenmentbooks" (haskoloh-sephorim) did not miss their mark. Through their influence the Russian Jews began to think, feel, and live in an atmosphere of greater refinement. On me also had they made a deep impression, and I applied myself still more diligently to the Jewish culture! MY INTERCOURSE WITH MASKILIM. After my wedding I was more independent and lived according to my own tastes and inclinations. I needed to account of my doings to no one, and feared no one, since I earned my living through my own efforts.
