The United States was directl and profoundly affected by the suspension of communication with urope, invol as its most serious consequences the tem orary breaking down 0 the export trade and the collapse Of the moral markets, with resulting Shock to the credit system. There had been extraordinary efforts on the part of European holders Of American securities to realize by sales in the New York market. The securities markets were badly demoralized prices fell with alarming rapidity and the country was exposed to a Serious and disastrous drain of gold.
